Sound Level Meters & Light Meters

Sound level meters, noise dosimeters, and light meters for occupational safety and environmental surveys.

Sound vs light

  • Sound level meters / dosimeters — workplace noise exposure, OSHA-style surveys, and environmental acoustic checks. Look for A/C weighting, Fast/Slow response, and dose/TWA features on personal dosimeters.
  • Light meters — illuminance (lux / foot-candle) for workplaces, facilities, and inspection tasks.

Selection tips

  • Match weighting and time response to your procedure.
  • Prefer logging or Bluetooth / SD models when you need records for reports.
  • Windshield balls and calibrators (when stocked) keep field measurements consistent.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a sound level meter and a noise dosimeter?

A sound level meter gives you a spot reading of sound level where you are standing. A noise dosimeter is worn to track a person's exposure. The REED R8085 combines a noise dosimeter, sound level meter and data logger with a personal noise exposure (%Dose) reading. The REED R8086 is a personal noise dosimeter.

Which REED sound level meters meet Type 2 accuracy?

REED specifies the R8050, R8060, R8070SD, R8075 and R8080 at ±1.4 dB, meeting Type 2 standards, over a 30 to 130 dB measuring range. The R8085 dosimeter is specified at ±1.0 dB (Type 2) over 35 to 130 dB.

Do these meters offer A and C weighting and Fast/Slow response?

Yes. The R8050, R8060, R8070SD, R8075, R8080 and R8085 all list A and C frequency weighting. REED also specifies Fast/Slow time weighting (125 ms and 1 s) on these models. The REED R1620 offers A and C weighting too.

Which sound meters record data?

  • R8070SD and R8080: data logging sound level meters.
  • R8085: noise dosimeter with a built-in data logger. PC software (R8085-PC) and a USB cable (R8085-USB) are sold separately.
  • R1620: Bluetooth 5.0 connection to the REED Smart Series App (iOS and Android).

How do I check a sound level meter before a survey?

Use the REED R8090 Sound Level Calibrator. It generates a stable acoustic signal at two levels, 94 dB and 114 dB, at 1000 Hz (±4%) with ±0.5 dB accuracy, so you can confirm your meter is reading correctly.

What range do the REED light meters cover?

  • R1630: 0 to 100,000 lux (0 to 9290 fc).
  • R8130: up to 400,000 lux (40,000 fc).
  • R8100SD: 2,000, 20,000 and 100,000 lux ranges, with data logging and Type K/J temperature input.
  • R8180: a solar power meter, up to 2000 W/m².
